On the 7th May 2012, many people braved the cold and the drizzling rain to celebrate the official opening of the wetland park in Firth Park.

The ‘Ripples in the Pond’ project has transformed the old boating lake into an environmentally friendly zone, allowing everyone to enjoy themselves whilst admiring the new features of the park and appreciating the natural wonders the park emphasises.

Councillor Joan Barton officially opened the park by planting a weeping willow tree and unveiling a plaque for the park. The official opening of the park was also attended by Lord Mayor Sylvia Dunkley and MP David Blunkett.

The event also included arts and crafts for kids, such as painting plant pots and planting their own sunflowers, whilst others enjoyed music from the band Son Para Todos and Maypole Dancing performed by the kids at Brushes Busy Kids Club.
