Story: Saleema Imam

Over the past few years you will have read lots of local history articles in the Messenger, many by members of Burngreave Local History Group.

The local history group was started by the Messenger, and is supported by well known local historian, Suzanne Bingham. Based initially at the Vestry Hall, the class gave local residents the skills to do their own research using websites, the Sheffield Archives and the Local Studies Library. Later the class moved to St Catherine’s School where we looked at Victorian themes of interest in the area.

Book launch

The idea occurred to put some of our research into a book about the area in the 1800s. The resulting book – Pitsmoor a peek into the past – will be launched on

June 16th at Burngreave Library from 11am – 2pm. All welcome!

The book covers a variety of interests and areas:

With maps and many accompanying photographs and pictures (in both black and white and colour), there’s something to interest everyone.

Pitsmoor – A peek into the past, costs £7 and you can get your copy at Burngreave Library or the Chapel in Burngreave Cemetery on Sundays.

If you would like to join the Burngreave Local History Group contact the Messenger, 242 0564 email mail@burngreavemessenger.org.
