Story John Mellor

A much-loved family pet was cruelly put to death on 5th May 2012 by a shot from an air rifle.

The 14 year-old cat was shot on Saturday, 5th May between 9am and 10.30am by an airgun or pellet gun.

Does any reader of the Burngreave Messenger know who might have been using airguns on that morning? The shooting occurred somewhere in the vicinity of Pitsmoor Road, Roe Lane and Orphanage Road. The cat doesn't wander very far from that area.

Hobbes was always a friendly and trusting cat. The shot passed through the back of his neck and the vets were unable to save his life.

The death of this longstanding family friend was a devastating blow for the family, who were in floods of tears.

The family said:

“If you have any information that may lead to the identity of the culprit, please contact the police on 101 so that no other families in the Burngreave area will face the trauma of suddenly losing a longstanding family friend in such a horrible way.”

The police incident number is 738 of 5th May 2012.
