Consultation starts on Ellesmere Green

Sheffield City Council has proposed plans to improve Ellesmere Green which are anticipated to begin in the Summer 2013. Public Consultation will take place between Monday, 2 July and Friday, 27 July 2012. They would like to hear residents’ views on the proposed improvements by filling in their questionnaire or visiting the following exhibitions on Saturday 7th July 2012 at Vestry Hall/Ellesmere Green 11am until 3pm, and Thursday 12th July 2012 at the New Roots Café (Spiral Hill) 12 noon until 7pm.

Ellesmere Plan

Bus stop moved

The main proposals consist of the relocation of the bus lay-by on Ellesmere road and changes to parking around the area. The bus lay-by will be moved to create a new events space on the Green. A new bus stop will be provided with a raised kerb and tactile paving to make it easier to get on and off the bus.

Changes to parking

Additional on-street parking will be provided near to the existing toilets, between 6.30pm and 8am and weekends when traffic levels are lower (double yellow lines at the moment). The scheme retains parking bays on Ellesmere Road, adjacent to the shops, although two parking spaces would be removed on the shops side of Ellesmere Road, to allow for the new crossing point. The Council is proposing to introduce a time limit of either 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours for parking and will assess all the responses and if appropriate, decide which time limit would be most suitable.

Demolition of public toilets and new features

Other proposed plans include the demolition of the existing public toilets, and the construction of new metal railings to surround the Green on the Spital Hill and Gower Street sides to protect the planting of new flowers. There are also plans to create a new central meeting point which will include the replacement of the existing benches in the central seating area, stone sitting walls and a public art feature. A new, wider footpath will also be established to lead people to safe crossing points.
