The Sheffield Safeguarding Board did some city-wide research which inspired Owlerbrook School Council to initiate their own research, produce an action plan and set up a friendship week at the school.
Burngreave Community Radio came to school and worked with a group of y2 and y3 children. You can still hear the children repeating the jingles across the school.
The school council children chose some songs to put on a friendship CD, set up a stall in the mornings and sold these using their great marketing and business skills.
At the end of the week at the friendship celebration assembly the head teacher Sue Bridges was amazed. The children have gained a better understanding of what bullying means which is something you do on purpose, more than once.
Owler Brook School had a friendship week because they don't want bullies. They will always have kind people at Owler Brook School and that is why the children think it is the best. GO FRIENDSHIP. Layla
The school had an assembly which looked closely at the story of the ‘Titanic’. Though the people/passengers on the boat didn’t know each other, they still persevered and helped each other to survive and stay alive. The school’s Y3 children made a short clip and showed ways people could be bullied and ways people could become better friends which include: sharing, caring, looking after others, helping, encouraging others, including others, being kind, respecting others and treating others the way you want to be treated. Class 1 had circle time and did a little movie and they said that they could never be bullies. Class 7 had circle time and made friendship bracelets. Miss Bridges, the head teacher thought it was a wonderful week and the children got to learn more about feelings and working together she was proud of all the work that the children did. At lunchtimes the teachers gave the children strings to make friendship bracelet. The Y3 made a video about bullying and they watched it on Friday in a special friendship celebration assembly. Umamah
Year three had a special afternoon. They named what made their friends special, attached this to balloons and let them go and they all said a rhyme:
‘Be friends, stay friends, never ever break friends’ as they all let go of their balloons.
