Level 2 Environmental Conservation Apprenticeship – Sheffield
An exciting new apprenticeship programme has been launched in Sheffield, partially funded by the ‘Sheffield City Council’s 100 Apprenticeships’ initiative. Eleven young people will have the chance to learn new skills with a view to developing a career within the environmental sector.
Five of Sheffield’s environmental organisations will be hosting the apprentices:
The Ranger Service, Activity Sheffield (3 apprentices)
Sheffield Wildlife Trust (3 apprentices)
The River Stewardship Company (2 apprentices)
Tinsley Tree Project (2 apprentices)
The Steel Valley Project (1 apprentice)
Entry Requirements --- To qualify for these opportunities candidates must:
Be aged 16-18
Have an appropriate level of Maths and English
Be registered as not in employment, education or training (NEET)
Complete a 7 week ‘Pre-apprenticeship’ course at Heeley City Farm (see attached flier).
Level 2 Environmental Conservation Apprenticeship – Course Content
The apprenticeship posts are 37 hours per week for 15 months, made up of 4 days with the employers gaining vocational experience and 1 day at The Sheffield College.
At The Sheffield College (Hillsborough campus) the apprentices will take a technical certificate in Land Based Activities, study Key Skills Maths and English if they do not have the relevant GCSEs and will gain practical experience on site too.
They will have a tutor who will monitor how they are doing on their entire Apprenticeship programme including practical assessments in the workplace toward their Diploma in Work based Environmental Conservation. This tutor will also carry out progress reviews with both them as employees and their employers.
In addition to this, each apprentice will gain the following on the job vocational skills and experience plus additional skills including:
Skills in application form writing and interview techniques First aid at work certificate Minimum of 1 machinery certificate (e.g. brushcutter)
Wages £2.60 per hour
