Parents concerned at Firvale Academy meeting

Fir Vale Anti-Academy Meeting
Fir Vale Anti-Academy Meeting

Story: Fran Belbin

Around 50 people attended a meeting called by the Sheffield Anti-Academies Alliance on the evening of Monday 13th June to voice their concerns about Fir Vale School's bid for academy status.

Governors at Fir Vale are due to make their decision at a meeting on Wednesday, following a consultation exercise. However, speakers at the meeting argued that the consultation was flawed, as only the argument in favour of academies had been put forward with no opportunity to ask questions or discuss the issues involved. Parents of children in Fir Vale's feeder schools reported that they had not been consulted at all.

The meeting concluded with parents and Labour councillors agreeing to lobby the governors to extend the consultation period and facilitate a genuine debate about the advantages and disadvantages of becoming an academy.

The lobby will take place at Fir Vale School, Owler Lane at 5 pm on Wednesday 15th June.
