Burngreave Cemetery – Saturday 10th September 2011

With Leonie Kapadia & Steve Clements

Meet at the Melrose Road entrance to the Cemetery (At the junction of Melrose Road and Burngreave Street). Grid Reference SK 35900 89034. The walk will last 1 and 1/2 hours.

Burngreave Cemetery was established between 1859 and 1860. The area now occupied by the cemetery was mainly agricultural land with a small area of woodland towards the southwestern tip.

The Burngreave Green Audit in 2003 showed the site has important ecological features including the area of relict ancient woodland, areas of acid grassland and areas of species rich neutral grassland which host a number of BAP and red data books species including butterflies, birds and plants. Official surveys for the site show only 3 species of fungi, however, many more have been sited and this will be a great opportunity to gather records.
