Fund Raising Meal

Local resident Mohammed Amin from Firvale is raising money for a gene therapy programme at the SITraN research centre at Sheffield University, which he hopes will help his son Saeed and other children suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is a muscle wasting condition, similar to motor neuron disease, which results in paralysis.

Though 50% of children with SMA die by the age of 2, Saeed at 14 is still attending Firvale School, though now in a wheel chair. He finds it difficult to write so works with a laptop which also, like any other youngster he uses to surf the internet and also enjoys playing with his Xbox.

Currently there are very few treatment possibilities hence the decision to raise money for the gene therapy programme being worked on by Professor Mimoun Azzouz.
