2011 Election Candidates

There will be five candidates in Burngreave for the local election on 5th May 2011. The election is for one of Burngreave’s seats on the City Council.

On the same day, there is a referendum to vote “Yes” or “No” to changing the voting system (for MPs only) to the “Alternative Vote”. Supporters of the “Yes” vote say it would make elections more representative; “No” campaigners said it would be too complicated.

The local election candidates for Burngreave are:

Maxine Bowler

Trade Union And Socialist Coalition

Russell Cutts

Conservative

Ibrar Hussain

Labour

Javid Khan

LibDem

Chris Sissons

Green

The deadline for registering to vote or to ask for a postal or proxy vote is 14th April. You will need to fill in a form from the Town Hall elections office – see http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/elections, e-mail elections@sheffield.gov.uk or ring 273 4093.

There is also a change to some of the polling stations this year so some people will go to cast their votes in a different place from before.

The biggest change is the creation of a new Busk Meadow polling district, where voters will go to the Norwood & Bishopsholme Community Centre on Bishopsholme Rd.

The 109 people still living in the Skinnerthorpe area will now go to vote at either Fir Vale School or at St Cuthbert’s in Fir Vale.

And about 200 people above Brunswick Rd, who used to vote at Verdon Recreation Centre, will now have to go to the polling station at the Library.

The new locations of polling stations will be printed on polling cards which are being delivered now.
