Weigh Ahead

Weigh Ahead is a free NHS weight management service designed for people who have been unsuccessful in their attempts to lose weight and are significantly overweight or obese. This includes anyone who has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or over or someone who has a BMI of 35, but has another medical condition such as diabetes.

The service offers personalised, tailored support delivered by a range of qualified health professionals, over a period of 12 weeks. This approach helps people make long lasting changes to their lifestyle and overcome their difficulty in reducing and maintaining their weight.

Since its launch in October 2010 the service has already been successful in helping a number of local people achieve their personal weight management goals.

Jane Bird, local Councillor, and the city's Lord Mayor in 2009:

“It's about a life-style change, not just about what you eat. I don't like the gym or keep fit, but I love walking, so the Weigh Ahead staff advised me to do more of that. They were really lovely to talk to and gave useful information about how to read food labels quickly, and little things like using smaller dinner plates. I've lost 4 inches off my waist, gone down 2 dress sizes, and I feel healthier in myself. It's the best thing my doctor ever sent me to.”

The following comments have been provided by people who have used the service:

“Excellent service, not a diet but a change in lifestyle” Female, 60

“The service helped me a lot to get on the track to losing weight” Male, 34

“Weigh Ahead was fantastic. I received loads of good exercises and advice” Female, 28

“Thank you for your support and all the help you have given me as I don't think I could have got this far without you” Male, 35
