The North East Community Assembly ‘Heart of the Community’ awards recognise those who have gone the extra mile in the community.

The unsung heroes and heroines living in the local community were given special awards at this ceremony to thank them for going beyond the call of duty. Twenty individuals and groups were nominated in the Burngreave Ward and Councillors chose three to receive an award.

The ceremony included some touching and some heartbreaking winners. A group of young people who organise activities for other young people from Yemeni, Somali and Pakistani backgrounds who call themselves The High Flyers were given an award. Also Ricky Bennett who has recently retired after 25 years service with SADACCA.

Wendy Skelton (67) from Wincobank nominated the third award winner, Gwendoline Sanderson, who has been a Brown Owl and District Leader for over 60 years. Wendy says:

“It will be brilliant to see Gwen get the recognition she deserves. Through her dedication to guiding she has touched hundreds of lives.

“I was in Gwen’s Brownie pack at St Cuthbert’s in 1951, and the guidance she gave us then has stood the test of time. She taught me the value of giving before you receive. We are the people we are today because of the support we received from Gwen in our younger lives.”

The North East Community Assembly area is in the shape of a heart, and the award was a small clock engraved with a heart.
