Greenfingers Open Day

Nestled in the heart of Grimesthorpe, you will find an abundance of fruit and vegetables. Thanks to the hard work of Greenfingers members and staff, we had an excellent open day on September 9th.

On this glorious sunny day, it was a chance to show people how gardening can help relax the mind through physical activities. On show were home-grown organic fruit and vegetables, home-made pickles and hand-made cards.

The original idea of a GP at Pitsmoor Surgery, this project has been benefiting our community since 1999. People with mental health difficulties from differing backgrounds can work together to gain confidence and to enhance their own lives.

Currently, a Women’s Group is developing a medicinal herb garden. There is also a successful singing group who performed at last year’s open day.

After tours of the allotments and before everyone settled down to the barbeque, Diane (the manager of the project) gave a short speech of welcome and to explain the current aims of the project.

The highlight of the day was the chicken barbeque from Mehmet the Chef: this had to be the best tasted in Burngreave for many a year!

Over seventy people attended. Thanks to those people who worked hard to make the event a pleasurable and educational experience.
