Free Fruit Abundant in Burngreave

Apple Blossom
Apple Blossom

Have you been enjoying the sight of blossom on the fruit trees around Burngreave recently? This year’s display has been wonderful and very welcome after such a cold start to the year. Apples, pears, plums and varieties of edible cherries are all found in this area. Much of this fruit will go to waste; perhaps because people don’t notice it, may not be physically able to harvest it or are just overwhelmed by the sheer quantities produced on their own trees.

Abundance is a citywide project which harvests the seasonal glut of local fruit. Last year a small team of Burngreave-based volunteers distributed apples collected from trees in Pitsmoor to three local children’s centres. We’re already thinking about this year’s harvest and have plans to make chutneys and preserves, as well as apple and pear juice.

If you have a fruit tree in your garden and would like Abundance volunteers to help you gather your produce please contact us – you will get the first share. And if you are interested in becoming an urban harvester or would like to help with picking, distributing or processing please get in touch. Our busy period is between September and the end of October.
