Kashmir Earthquake Relief Fund is organising a sponsored climb up Ben Nevis in Scotland in May.

A multi-ethnic group of 46 is taking part in the climb on Bank Holiday Monday to raise funds to rebuild a girls’ college that collapsed in Azad Kashmir in 2005. The college will be renamed Sheffield Girls’ College, Bagh.

However, building on the hillside site and inflation are increasing the cost so the fund wants to raise money as quickly as possible so the project can be finished. Kath Swinney, an ESOL teacher from Burngreave, said,

“I taught in a summer school at the college the summer after the earthquake and was so impressed by the bravery of the girls and their determination to study, in spite of their own personal losses and the harsh reality of working in tents through the winter snow and the summer monsoons. I would love to return to Kashmir and see the college finished. It will be a proud day for Sheffield and Burngreave in particular.”
