The Grimesfire Initiative 2010
Take someone with imagination and a bright idea; add a willing partner and a handful of helpers and you end up with a party that will be remembered for a long time.
The weather turned wet in the afternoon but preparations went ahead any way. Food was prepared and cooked, fire wood collected and delivered and the meeting room on the allotment made ready to entertain those braving the weather in the evening. We may have had a moment of doubt here and there! Would anyone turn up? Would we have too much food? Will the fire light? In the end the food was consumed in quick time, even the 65 pancakes; and the fire kept everyone warm and entertained long into the night.
This event drew its inspiration from the Roman Rig, an ancient earthwork that stretches from the lower side of Grimesthorpe Allotments along the ridge over Wincobank Hill and out almost to Doncaster. The Grimesfire Initiative, generously funded by the North East Community Assembly, was the first of a series of annual Spring Fire Festivals to mark the beginning of the growing season.
