Story: Mark Dixon, age 16
Creating a safe learning place for young people.
The Cellar Space was started in 1998 in a converted cellar of a pub called The Furnival on Verdon Street in Burngreave. It looks after young people between the ages of 11 and 16 who need support and help.
There are lots of activities on offer like cooking, art, help with English and Maths and outdoor activities like growing vegetables on the allotment or going abseiling.
One of the best things about it is the staff because they are easy to talk to and always listen. You can have help with your reading and writing, you can work in groups or one-to-one. Everything you do makes you feel more confident about yourself and ready to stand on your own two feet.
I’ve been coming to the Cellar Space for the last 4 years and it’s certainly changed my life. It made me like school more and it’s helped me get more qualifications. My attendance at school has got better and I’ve met new people.
