Story: Inderjit Bhogal

A Community litter pick on 9th May had about 45 people participating in cleaning up three areas of Burngreave.

Some people worked on the area around Verdon St, others went to Spital Hill and a third set attended to the Crabtree Pond area.

There were people of different ages and faiths involved. Organising a litter pick is not about a dirty job that needs doing: the purpose is to say, “let’s take more pride in the area where we live”. It is also about bringing people together and in that, the event was very successful. Thanks are due to all those who participated and to the organisations involved: Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Yorkshire & Humberside Faiths Forum and the Furnival on Verdon St.

Alison Buxton, from the Sheffield Islamic Network for the Environment (SHINE), said,

“We do litter picks all over Sheffield; we try to do one a month. The idea behind the group is to bring out the Islamic teachings which are about saving the environment – so we try to practice our faith and do the right thing for the planet.”

Local resident, Janette, commented,

“I think we had a good mix of people – more than we expected. It’s encouraging because people have said ‘when will the next one be happening?’”

The event was so successful that the intention is to hold another in the Autumn.
