Students working for cohesion

Farhan and Derrick

Local residents and Hallam undergraduates Derrick Okrah and Farhan Ahmed are leading the way with new University Society SAMEEM – which stands for “Seeking A More Enriched and Enlightened Mind”.

There are SAMEEM societies in many other universities in England, all promoting the idea of networking, cohesion and interfaith.

Derrick and Farhan have been active in the Burngreave community for several years. Farhan explained why they got involved:

“Our experience of working in the Burngreave area has given us the confidence in working with people of all faith and no faith. We also want to promote the diversity we can see in the community that we live in.”

With their launch event in February, looking at interfaith, unity and love, Derrick and Farhan are keen to see Burngreave residents get involved. They particularly want to hear from other Hallam University students living in the area and from faith leaders who could offer their knowledge of faith issues to the student society, perhaps by speaking at a meeting.

If you would like to know more or are able to speak about faith at the event, please contact them at sameemhallamsociety@yahoo.co.uk
