Many Burngreave shops and businesses kept their doors open on Wednesday 1st December, despite heavy snow, more than 12 inches in places, over night.
All local schools were closed, some for a second day, and First bus services were cancelled leaving a limited Stagecoach service in place on main roads during the day.
Snow continued to fall during on Wednesday, but people ventured out, some to enjoy the snow and some to get supplies. Mr Patel's Wine Shop on Catherine Street, was open as usual, keeping stocked up with bread and milk, which were in great demand. Mr Patel said,
“I was here until 10pm last night and I was here again at 9.30am this morning, we never shut!”
There was also plenty of life on Spital Hill with many shops open, you could even get fresh naan at the bakery near Spital Street, and the Citizens Advice Bureau were still seeing those with appointments or emergencies. A number of abandoned vehicles were left on the route to the Wicker, but there too shops and take-aways were open. And the ever reliable Wicker Pharmacy had its doors open as usual.
