Fir Vale School are again celebrating an increase in the number of students passing their GCSEs, with an impressive increase from 34% to 43% of student achieving 5 grade A*-C, including English and Maths.
Headteacher Lesley Bowes told the Messenger how delighted she was with the results,
“We are especially delighted with the huge increase in the core subjects, English, Maths and Science, as these build a foundation for higher level study. Working with the community and parents in particular, we’ve seen a change in young people’s aspirations. Parents are really supporting learning at home, so this is an achievement for young people and families as well as the school.”
The school has also seen an 11% increase in all results, with 66% receiving 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C across all subjects. The school has been encouraging students to take exams a year early in some subjects, giving them an early taste of success that has built confidence for the final year exams.
The school has recently received permission for its expansion, and will increase its intake each year from 150 to 210 pupils from 2011.
