Fir Vale Fun Day was a great event organised at Fir Vale school on 19th July 2009 by local people to celebrate the summer and the community of Fir Vale.

The school’s playground was full of people who came to enjoy the stalls, games, food and music which was booming from the corner of the playground. It made you feel like moving to the rhythms of the live Latin American band. There were also local performances, including Arabic dancers, Slovakian music and dance, Nasheeds (Islamic songs), rappers and street dancers.

The weather was quite changeable on the day but otherwise people enjoyed it, as there were plenty of things to entertain people even in the rain.

I found out about many things at the festival and I spoke to a lot of the people about what they thought of the day.

“The food is delicious. It’s a very good price for a £1, so everyone can have some. I’ve had some Indian food, pakoras, fried chicken, banana fritters and dumplings and some little fairy cakes. It was all lovely.”

“I go to Fir Vale School. It’s a good thing for the community to get together and the food’s nice!”

“We run a craft group at Firs Hill, we sell things we’ve made by hand. We know a lot of the stallholders, we are all friends. We’ve had lots of customers, even though there’s been all that rain. The music’s been fabulous.”

“It’s a really good opportunity for people in the area to find out what’s going on, it’s also about having a good time. The people are lovely – this is a great mixed community.”

“I’ve met many of my old friends that I haven’t seen for a long time and I’ve met some new people. There’s a good atmosphere, good music and there’s plenty to do, people are friendly.”
