There are fantastic signs of new activity all over the place in Burngreave. The Transition Group have been focusing on how we can respond to the issues of climate change and energy depletion in a way that can help local people to thrive in what otherwise would be difficult times.

Burngreave Community Action Forum welcomed the emergence of Transition Burngreave as a focus for various activities around sustainability and the environment, and opportunities are appearing that can help us shift towards a more sustainable and positive future.

After two workshops over the summer, funded by the Federation of Community Development Learning, and stalls at local festivals, a ‘green’ street party is in the offing, with backing from local residents on Abbeyfield Road. As well as an enjoyable day to look forward to, a street party can be a good way for people to get to know their neighbours and build links for future projects.

The Friends of Burngreave Cemetery and Chapels, in conjunction with the Burngreave Transition Group, are holding an Apple Day and seed swap at the cemetery on Sunday 25th October between 11am and 3pm.

We’ll be pruning existing fruit trees near the adventure playground and possibly planting more, serving soup and apple pie, juicing apples, carving pumpkins and more.

Everyone’s invited! Bring some food to share, any seeds to swap and enjoy yourself.

New course on garden design

A Garden Design course, using permaculture principles, will be starting at the new Crescent Community Centre, St Catherine’s School on Saturday 3rd / Sunday 4th October. It's free to Burngreave residents. We’ll begin to look at the possibilities of changing the green areas in and around Firshill and St Catherine’s, including planning an outdoor classroom and pond areas for the schools.
