The stone facing of the landmark Wicker arches has recently had a clean-up, thanks to Network Rail and Sheffield City Council. The operation follows on from recent decorative lighting in the pedestrian arches and illumination above the main span. The work was to enhance the visual impact of the arches on the main route between Burngreave and the city centre.
Network Rail paid £56,000 and the council contributed a further £40,000 to the cost of cleaning.
However, whilst traders at the Wicker Forum had heard of early stage plans to renovate 22 of the arches on both sides of the Wicker, Network Rail’s spokesperson said they were “not aware of any big development planned for the arches."
