Look at most of our primary schools on any morning and there’s that pathetic tussle of cars and children and parents trying the most ridiculous and frequently dangerous manoeuvres. And tempers start to fray – not the most ideal start to a school day for any of us. So the novel, but very old, idea that walking might be the best is all the more important when two of our local schools are doubling in size and another two expanding as well.
For the last two and half years, every day at 8.15 you’ll see the walking bus – with driver and conductor – trooping along Scott Rd picking up groups of children at the various ‘stops’ en route. And sometimes you’ll hear them singing as well as seeing them.
But this ‘bus’ relies on having people to make sure it runs. And that’s where the contribution of John Mellor, Angela Needham, Yvonne Hayes, Lydia Lowman and Ingrid Gilson comes in. Because it’s these local parents, or local volunteers without school-age children, that have given up their time to make sure the bus is ready to leave, and arrives safely – and on time!
Recently, St Caths had a “walking bus assembly”. And rather explain how it worked, one of the volunteers (John) turned out with Gaby to demonstrate in the school hall how it worked – and then led a discussion about car pollution and the other benefits of walking. Needless to say, everyone loved it!
Many thanks for all the volunteers on the Walking Bus – John, Angela, Yvonne, Lydia and Ingrid.
