On a sunny Saturday in Abbeyfield Park, local people got together to find out how climate change will affect our area and how we can make sure we come out of the changes ahead, as a stronger, healthier, sustainable community. This meeting came from the workshop at the BCAF Quarterly meeting, where people said what they wanted to focus on.

Young and old shared their personal experiences by drawing and writing about their past and how this shaped their understanding of sustainability. Many remembered families growing food and keeping it through the winter and neighbours rallying round. One person reflected how nothing was wasted during her childhood in India, even the clay from old cups. After a refreshing lunch from Caribbean Cuisine, the workshop moved into two discussion groups. They identified the positive and negative effects seen in everyday life, in housing, transport, shopping, health choices, education and priorities in life.

Participants enjoyed a relaxed informative afternoon which gave the opportunity to meet and talk with new people. Ideas for action included sharing a community bus to go shopping and designing bike generators for household use.

The group agreed to meet again to prioritise ideas and make a practical action plan. All interested residents are welcome to come along and contribute.
