"Lego Club" has been running since November at Firs Hill School. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning with the help of Sheffield University students, Year 1 & 2 pupils and their parents enjoy construction together.
For many families this is a new experience and some have never come across "Lego" before. Parents are given a chance to engage with their children through a fun and creative activity, resulting in joint learning for all.
There are different themes each week including transport, spaceships and rockets, and bridge building. Soon they will take part in National Science Week.
Parents have been giving children praise and encouragement for their achievements and some teachers have reported that the children involved in Lego Club come to class calmer and more settled for the start of their day!
This goes to show that extended schools activities like these really do make a difference to children's daily lives. One parent, Saskia, said:
"Parents don't always have time to play one to one with children, especially when you have more than one child. There's loads of Lego, more than you would have at home; they can be really imaginative."
Another parent Ansar Hussain said, "I come with my daughter. We used to play at home, but we can't play as much as I have a younger daughter and the small pieces are too dangerous for her. Here I can give a bit of time and see a smile on her face."
Some great creations have come out of Lego club and confidence and self esteem have grown through all.
