Madge Saunders

Dear Editor,

News has been received from the church in Jamaica that Reverend Madge Saunders passed away in her sleep on Sunday 1st March 2009, aged 96.

Many older Burngreave residents will remember Madge, who came to Sheffield in 1966 at the invitation of the Presbyterian Church. Along with Reverend R C Gillespie and the members of St James' Scott Road, she worked to support immigrants newly arriving from the West Indies and her influence was widely recognised throughout Sheffield.

After her return home in 1974 she was ordained a minister in the United Church of Jamaica and Grand Cayman where she played a significant part in its life and work right up to her death.

Our memories are full of affection for a great lady.

Barry Swift

Elder in St James Church Scott Road
