Following the great work of Green City Action and Hope ’08 in clearing pathways and steps, Sheffield Parks Department will be planting 8 trees surrounding the football pitch at Burngreave Recreation Ground.
The event is the first stage of the Burngreave Rec Masterplan – part of a co-ordinated approach to improving Burngreave’s environment and green spaces. The trees include a Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) – also known as the Canoe Birch because the waterproof bark was used to make canoes by the Native North American Indians. There is also a River Birch (Betula nigra), which has a great flaky, cinnamon coloured bark and three Cherry species which will flower right through from November to April. Once established, they will provide a welcome sight on a bleak winter’s day.
Combatting pollution
Trees help to combat pollution, reduce flash floods, attract wildlife and improve property values.
The planting of the birch and cherry will take place on 11th November at 10.45am. Pupils from Byron Wood School will join experts from Green City Action. Leonie Kapadia, Burngreave's forestry officer, will also be there. Everyone is cordially invited to join in on the day.
Dress for the weather and bring your gloves & wellies!
