Concern over human rights in the south of Yemen

Over 100 people, many from the Burngreave Yemeni community, attended a meeting at Verdon Street Recreation Centre on Saturday 14th June to express concerns at what they felt to be a deteriorating human rights situation in the Republic of Yemen. The meeting launched the Sheffield Branch of the National Committee in Solidarity with the South of Yemen.
The meeting expressed deep concern at claims that over 400 people had been detained without trial, that the military had fired on unarmed demonstrators and claims of a state of martial law in three areas of the south of Yemen: Aldhala, Radfan, Karesh.
The meeting was chaired by Abdullah Ali, who was joined on the platform by Mohamed Alsahami, Ali Fadl, Mohamed Awad, Mohamed Ashadeli and Abdul Razak Saleh. The platform sat in front of a banner calling for human rights in the south of Yemen and photographs of those allegedly detained without trial and shot and injured on demonstrations. The meeting adopted terms of reference for the group and elected a steering committee.
