Celebration Day Byron Wood
Celebration Day Byron Wood

Story: Rubina Perveen

On the 15th July 2008 the Byron Wood Parents Group came together to hold a celebration event for all the parents and workers who have been involved in the setting up and running of the group.

A special thanks was said to the parents by Alexis Cowan (extended schools co-coordinator) and David Hall (learning mentor). The parents felt that this day was to be dedicated especially to the people who helped organise the group – David Hall, Alexis Cowan and Rashida Hassanali as well as Mr Carter (Head teacher) for letting us establish ourselves as a group at Byron Wood School. Also Smaira Saddique, Family Advocacy worker, who has been liaising with families and has established herself at the school.

As a group it was decided that we would all show our appreciation by bringing in some food from our ethnic backgrounds. The Somali and Pakistani parents did so and the event was well presented. The morning was well enjoyed and all the group sat together to discuss further events and enjoy the company of each other once again! All the food was fab! Rice, curry, not forgetting sandwiches, drinks and traditional sweet meats. A celebration event not to be forgotten.

Watch out for future events from September.

The parents group have planned a Multicultural event in November. There will be new classes for parents. Sewing classes and coffee mornings, plus other short courses throughout the year. Also a brand new start for any parent wanting to join the group – you can contact Alexis Cowan at Byron Wood for further information.

Lastly I would like to mention that the school has supported parental involvement throughout the year and has been very encouraging, especially to parents. The school sports day was an example of this achievement. All the children participated with a positive attitude and parents also enjoyed the day. Many of the parents have gained the confidence to approach members of staff and ask about the school, the curriculum, the out of school clubs such as the reading, football, and art and crafts clubs.

It’s been a fruitful year for the school and parents.
