- [•] Responding to a tragedy
Just fewer than one hundred people, young and old, attended the last Area Panel meeting in November. The theme of the meeting was the implications of the recent tragic death of Jonathan Matondo, and how the major local agencies are going to change, or intensify, their services in response.

A Page Hall Pioneer – local resident and member of the Page Hall Community Association receives a New Year Area Panel Award 2008, for his determination to make sure Page Hall gets the best.

David – or ‘Das’ as he’s always called, receives a New Year Area Panel Award for his voluntary work at Christ Church, much of which has been with young people.

Sue has been awarded a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for her volunteer time spent as a community governor on Whiteways Junior School governors for over four years.

Anne and Flo receive a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for their work with with the tenants and residents on Firshill over the years.

Roger and Anne are two of the longest serving members of Wensley Tenants & Residents Association, and both reveived a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for the pioneering role they’ve played as the first tenants who moved onto the Wensley estate.

A wonderful example of a local team, recruited mainly from this area, run entirely by volunteer. Their managers and coaches receive a New Year Area Panel award for their committment.

Rose Ardron receives a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for her local voluntary commitment since arriving in Burngreave in 1973.

Mr Fazal Hussain was quite ill when he was nominated for an award, and as many of you will be aware, he subsequently died.The Area Panel honour the memory of Fazal Hussain with a New Year Area Panel Award 2008.

Anesar receives a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for her work over the last seven years with the Yemeni Community Association as both a paid, part-time ESOL tutor, and as a part-time support worker.

Chief Inspector Jon Ekwubiri receives a Burngreave New Year's Honours Award for his work with the Burngreave Police Team.

Elaine receives a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 in recognition of her work as a youth worker. For her, the need to support girls, young women and mothers/parents has lived in everything she’s been involved with.

Imran is awarded a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 in recognition of his devotion and dedication to attempting as one individual to offer an alternative path to that followed by some other young men in our neighbourhoods.

Jim is awarded a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for his role as a Streetforce worker and the fact he characterises the awareness of what a “clean and well kept environment means for the morale and sense of well being for the wider community.”

Jon receives a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for his 10 years of work in Sheffield employed by the Parks & Countryside service as a woodlands officer/countryside development officer/wood lane manager.

For his committed work with the BNDfC Engagement Team and making the annual Bonfire Night event such a local event, Leroy Betts receives a New Year Area Panel Award 2008.

Nasira wins a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for her three years of committment to Burngreave young people – in particular with the Pakistani study support project, Reach High 2.

Nicky Wilson receives a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for her work on the three year Burngreave Voices project for the Galleries & Museums Trust, developing the oral history archive of Burngreave.

- [•] Steve Edwards
Steve Edwards is awarded a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for his eight years of work on Pitsmoor Adventure Playground. Steve provides a safe, friendly, fun and welcoming place for some of Burngreave’s most vulnerable children.

Carwood TARA are awarded a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for their efforts on their estate, and is given as a big ‘thank you’ to those members of the committee who have just met this week to hold their second AGM.

- [•] Burngreave Children’s Centre volunteers
The volunteers from Burngreave Children’s Centre – the heart if you like of the Burngreave Sure Start programme – receive a New Year Area Panel award.

One of the longest established voluntary organisations in this area, GCA win a New Year Area Panel Award 2008 for the impact they continue to have on this area, and for being a catalyst for “bringing people together and getting them involved”.

- [•] Burngreave Streetworx
It is unusual to have such a ‘young’ project honoured at the Burngreave New Year honours, but given what has happened in Burngreave with Jonathan Matondo’s tragic shooting, and the aftermath – it felt right that the workers from Streetworx were duly recognised.

The next meeting of the Panel on 20th February 6pm at St James meeting room, Scott Road/Abbeyfield Road will host a discussion about how the Council can help address climate change and what local communities like Burngreave, and individuals can do!
