At 1.45pm on 11th July Burngreave witnessed the loss of another young life; Tarek Chaiboub was shot dead outside the barbers on Spital Street.

The 17 year old from Wincobank, also known as GT, had recently been released from hospital after being stabbed.

The murder was witnessed by local workers and residents, people on a passing bus saw the shots fired. Residents expressed their concern to the Messenger:

“He must have been worried about his safety because he was carrying a gun. They are fighting over nothing, it’s just little things,” a young man told us.

“Regeneration is only on the surface, all this is going on underneath,” said a woman who couldn’t get back home because of the cordon.

Inside this issue we look at the newly launched gang strategy, and the views of a young man on the edge of youth violence:

“Everyone is talking about gun and knife crime. A lot has been set up to work with us young people to move us off the streets. The ones that need working with are not even touched…”
