Champions inspire Sports Foundation

Young residents, Abdirisak Ahmed and Muktar Mohammed, have won gold medals in Junior Athletics at county and national levels, while Muktar also plays for Sheffield Wednesday. Their achievements inspired the Somali community in Burngreave to launch the Sheffield Sports Foundation in June.

More than 40 young athletes, trainers, and residents attended the launch meeting organised by Mustafa Mohammed, Roble Ayah and Ali Yussuf. Roble told the meeting:

“We want to know why young people from black and ethnic minorities are not involved in sport, so we can support them to participate and get professional training.”

Mustafa, who has been training athletes since 2004, and has more than 15 young people currently training at Don Valley Stadium, said:

“It has taken a lot of courage, there are a lot of barriers. I’m really proud of the group and what the boys have achieved.”

The Foundation called for people to help by referring young people; providing transport; sharing facilities and providing technical help in setting up the Foundation.

17 year Abdirasak Yusuf Ahmed, started in athletics with the Burngreave Mile Run. UK champion in 800m, 3000m and 5000m, he has represented England winning two gold medals for cross country.

“I started when I was 12 and train five times a week. When you win the race you feel proud because of all the effort you’ve put in. You have to rely on yourself – it makes you a strong person. I’m hoping make the Olympics in 2012, or 2016.”

17 year old Muktar Mohammed plays for Sheffield Wednesday under 18s, and has won gold medals for 800m and 400m at county level and UK school games.

“My PE teacher at Abbeydale Grange referred me to Sheffield Wednesday and I started athletics last summer. I hope to make it in football in the future, maybe to play in Italy.”
