Black History celebration

A Black History Celebration is being held at the Northern College, Wentworth Castle on Saturday 13th October 2007 to commemorate the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery act in 1807. The free event will include speeches, workshops and attractions for the whole family and a full gospel concert.

The event is a chance to learn more about the history of Black people and to celebrate their enormous contribution to British society.

The event will feature a free live gospel concert with both youth and adult choirs from Barnsley, Sheffield, Bradford and Leeds as well as Ugandan Drummers.

There will be a wide selection of creative workshops and attractions to keep the whole family occupied and entertained. The activities include children's block printing, African drumming, making carnival costumes, drama and many more.

The event is funded by the Academy for Community Leadership (AfCL) and forms part of their celebrations for Black History Month. For more information please contact Jackie Morgan on 01226 776031 or email jackie@afcl.ac.uk.

The event begins with a Keynote speech by Eroll Walters – Director of Black Londoners Forum speaking on The Contribution by Black Athletes to the Olympic Games.

The event runs from 12.30pm, with the gospel concert beginning at 4pm. The Northern College is situated at Wentworth Castle, Stainborough, Barnsley S75 3ET.
