BCAF agrees support for City of Sanctuary

BCAF pledged its support to City of Sanctuary, an organisation recognising the unique needs of asylum seekers and refugees and ensuring that they’ll be made welcome, at its quarterly forum meeting on Saturday 6th October 2007.

By pledging its support, BCAF is joining over 70 existing supporting groups, including student organisations, charities and faith-based groups. Sheffield was recently made the first ‘City of Sanctuary’ when Sheffield City Council pledged its support to the organisation. The media launch was held for this purpose on 18th September 2007.

Simon Heywood, a spokesperson for City of Sanctuary, said that, “I was struck by the amount of work already being done in this area. I feel that BCAF’s support will be a good way to help us to publicise this work.”

A young woman said that, “I find this area has helped me to learn more about immigration and be more positive about it. There’s a clear difference between Burngreave and the rest of the city in terms of people’s attitudes.”

City of Sanctuary’s Annual General Meeting will be held at the Kashmir Curry Centre on Spital Hill on Wednesday 17th October at 6.30pm. The meal is £10 per person with a vegetarian option being available. Please contact them at http://www.cityofsanctuary.com/contact if you wish to attend.
