Story: Ian Clifford

Many Burngreave residents joined the demonstration against the Government’s proposal to end free English courses for asylum seekers and other new arrivals. Estimates of participation in adult learning in Burngreave vary from 32% (LSC, 2004/5) to 45% (BNDfC MORI Household survey, 2006) but these figures are some of the highest in the City. However, if the Government’s proposed cuts to ESOL go ahead, English courses in Burngreave could be cut by as much as a quarter.
