Putting out the bin’ has never been a glamorous job. Two local artists want to change all that with a new community project that will bring art to your doorstep in an original and exciting way.

Cassie Limb and Zoe Smith, have created an exciting community art project that will generate interest in blue bin recycling in Burngreave. A state of the art bin sticker will be placed on the participating residents blue bins on July 2nd 2007. The pilot will include residents from Rock Street, Burngreave Road (Spital Hill to St Catherine’s Church), Melrose Road, Malton Street and Ellesmere Road.

Children from Byronwood School children have taken part in art workshops to design the bin stickers. Other local groups have also taken part including the Jeevan Project, a project for young Asian women with disabilities and the Burngreave Womens Health Group. Zoe Smith said:

“They really enjoyed taking part using exciting computer techniques to create the designs and were amazed by the high quality, bespoke bin stickers they received”

Burngreave is one of the areas that use their blue bins the least. Cassie Limb said:

“We feel its about lack of awareness and that our project will inform and empower the community, generating pride in their environment. When the blue bins go out for collection there will be an art gallery along the street for everyone to admire. We hope it will become a talking point for the community and increase the amount our local community recycles.”

Zoe added, “We’ve already had fantastic support from Unltd, Veolia, Burngreave Area Panel, Burngreave New Deal for Communities and Sheffield City Council and we hope that if the pilot project is successful we can increase the amount of residents that receive a bin sticker”.
