Burngreave resident, Peter Harding, was named by South Yorkshire Police as the flood victim who was thought to have died on the Wicker.
The Police said Mr Harding, who was 68 years old, got into difficulties in the flood waters between 5:00pm and 5:30pm on Monday 25th June 2007.
Earlier reports said that the incident happened on the Wicker. It has now been confirmed that it took place near the railway bridge on Newhall Road, close to the flooded Brightside Lane.
Mr Harding was making his way home to Burngreave along Newhall Road when water levels rose quickly from ankle height to chest deep. He was pulled unconscious from the water, but despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Northern General Hospital.
Police are appealing to trace the passer-by, who heroically dived in to rescue Mr Harding and attempted to resuscitate him. Police need to trace him urgently as he is a vital witness. Anyone with any information please telephone the police on 0114 2202020.
