The chairman of Democracy Network for Somaliland (DNS), Mr. Mohamed A. Issa, recently met Richard Caborn MP, Minister for Sport, and Councillor Ibrar Hussain at Richard Caborn’s office in Sheffield.
Discussion included the situation in Somalia generally and particularly the status of Somaliland and its achievements in terms of peace, stability and democracy. Somaliland is the north-west part of Somalia. Most Somali people in Sheffield are from Somaliland and many seek independence for the area.
The meeting was constructive, with a common understanding of all points discussed. Mohamed Issa explained the importance of engaging young people in Somaliland with sports to keep them from joining the violence and fighting going on in the rest of Somalia and asked the MP how he, as the minister for sport in Britain, can help Somaliland to improve its sports facilities.
Richard Caborn MP welcomed the idea and promised to work closely with the Democracy Network for Somaliland and to make enquiries with the Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn.
