Somali learners celebrate

Somali School Event
Somali School Event

The Association of Sheffield Community Language Schools (ASCLS), recently welcomed Maria Yusuf Bostock, the author of a new Somali language learning book, to meet young language learners from Burngreave’s Somali Language School.

The event took place at Verdon Street Recreation Centre where Maria was greeted by over 60 local children, their parents and tutors, as well as members of the community who had assisted her over the years. Each young learner was eager to receive their own signed copy of the book that will help them enjoy their learning.

A language cassette accompanies the book and this was developed with the help of the author’s son, Marcus, who recorded Sheffield children speaking.

The Somali curriculum pack is proving popular within mainstream schools such as Fir Vale School, Hinde House School, Silverdale School and two local primary schools, as well as within community-based classes.

Burngreave’s Somali Language School is run by Somali Education Breakthrough and is based at 199 Verdon Street. Sessions are held on Saturday mornings. To find out more please telephone 275 9040.
