Members of Sheffield’s black community were rewarded on 2nd November for their services to the community. The awards evening was held at SADACCA to mark the end of Black History Month.

Inside the main hall, round tables were set out in front of the stage. The event opened with introductions by Clinton McKoy followed by a dance act from Siyaya.

Diane Haimeed then presented awards to several children from the Yemeni Out of School Project – Bilal Ahmed, Sameera Hanash and Yasmin Fouad. Then personal educational achievement awards were presented to young people including Rochelle Dallas. Next were the black volunteer awards presented by Vena Wytner-Truscott to Aisha Hill, Javan Hayles and Patrice Allen.

Recipients of the Awards for Contribution to the Advancement of the Black Community included Rob Smith, Carmelita Duncan, Milton Samuels, Pat Murae Smith and Carmen Franklin.

Some residents have expressed concern that the awards were not more widely publicised. The Messenger spoke to Mr Bennett, coordinator at SADACCA:

“The awards are a partnership with Sheffield Futures and for the last five years has been for young people. It was suggested for the first time this year to award older members of the community. Ten people were nominated by members of SADACCA. Nomination forms for young people went to all the youth centres. Because of funding we had to limit numbers, but we catered for 100 people on the night. We promoted the evening with posters at SADACCA but people don’t see them and then say they weren’t told about it.”
