Burngreave has Bin Inspired!

Local artists and volunteers braved the rain on 2nd July to deliver bin art stickers to selected streets in Burngreave. Residents of Rock Street, Burngreave Road (Spital Hill to St Catherine’s Church), Melrose Road, Malton Street and Ellesmere Road who put out their blue recycling bins for collection received a state of the art bin sticker designed by children from Byron Wood School, community groups and local artists.

The Bin Inspired! project was created by Cassie Limb and Zoe Smith to address the low participation in the blue bin recycling scheme in Burngreave. Cassie Limb said, “We feel it’s due to lack of awareness, and that our project will inform and empower the community, generating pride in their environment. When the blue bins go out for collection there will be an art gallery along the street for everyone to admire! We hope it will become a talking point for the community and increase the amount our local community recycles.”

The day was a great success, and despite the rain the volunteers worked hard to complete the round. Cassie also added, “The feedback we got from the residents we met on the round was amazing. They were very supportive and impressed how great the bins looked; one resident said that it really brightened his morning walk to work down Rock Street”.

Zoe Smith said, “We noticed that some residents seemed confused about what to put in their blue bin. Paper and card are the only things allowed in the blue bins but some people had put in all other kinds of waste too. We will be feeding back to the council, and hopefully more information can then be supplied to the residents of Burngreave to stop this misunderstanding”.

Some residents missed out as their blue bin had not been put out for collection so the Bin Inspired! volunteers will be out again on the next blue bin collection day on 30th July. So, if you would like to participate, put out your bin and they will attach a sticker for you, or call them and they will deliver to your house.
