Madge Saunders – A Remarkable Woman

In November 1965 a woman called Madge Saunders arrived in Burngreave to begin working alongside the minister at St James Church in Burngreave.

Arriving with hope

Burngreave has always provided a safe haven for people migrating or fleeing from other countries. One of Burngreave’s most recently arrived communities is the Slovaks from Eastern Europe, travelling here for work now that Slovakia is part of the European Union. As with other communities before, their story is one of hopes fulfilled and difficulties still to overcome.

Longley Park Sixth Form College

Demolition looms

With memories of Woodside’s demolition still lingering many minds, more Burngreave residents now face the same trauma. The Masterplan, agreed by Council Cabinet in May 2OO5, is now being implemented.

On 6th September a major incident in and around the Gower Arms caused reason for further concerns about local police activity and tactics.

The Pegasus mural still stands defiantly on the side of the last house on Brotherton Street after nearly 3O years.

Wedding blessing

Local residents, Sia Angela Maturie and Ansumana Rahman Muctaru Sillah, celebarated their wedding on Saturday, 2nd September, in the presence of over 15O guests.

Firshill TARA would like to thank Milton Graham, who was Chairman of the Committee, for all his hard work for the Firshill Estate.

Diving bronze

Claire Blencowe, previously of Fir Vale School and now of Longley Park Sixth Form College has just had a successful competition in the Junior World Diving Championships in Malaysia.

Budding talent

There’s a budding talent in Burngreave in the form of amateur boxer Liam James Akers.

On one beautiful Wednesday, I found myself in a magnificent and incredible hair dressing shop, packed with a multitude of customers from all ages, genders and races awaiting their hair cuts.

The Kenyan Family Forum began in April and provides support for Kenyan immigrants who have moved here from Africa.
