Family Learning Day at Firth Park Community Arts College
Family Learning Day at Firth Park Community Arts College

On Saturday 14th October Firth Park Community Arts College opened its doors once again for its latest Family Learning Day. This regular twice-yearly event has gained the reputation of being a truly fun and exciting part of local community life.

Over 300 parents, students and local residents came to the event, including Burngreave residents. Participants were able to have a go at a wide range of community learning activities – from cake baking to woodwork or badminton to salsa dancing. New workshops featured this year include a Climbing Wall, Puppet Making, Tai Chi, Fun with Maths and a Comedy Club.

One happy mum said, “This is a real opportunity to spend some quality time with my children and to learn new things together. I shall definitely be coming here again next year.”

Family Learning Day is just one part of the school’s community learning programme. The school runs a wide range of classes in the evening which are open to all adults in the area including Burngreave. There are still spare places on some classes, including Keep Fit, Festive Crafts, Pottery, Yoga and. From November three new classes will be starting – Music Technology and International Cooking and Food Hygiene/Safety.

Also in November the school will be celebrating diversity in our multicultural community through two events. The first is the school’s annual Eid Celebration on Wednesday 8th November from 3.30–5.30pm. This features Jagged Entertainment and includes a fashion show, breakdancing, bhangra and hip hop as well as henna art and food. Tickets for the Eid Celebration are £1 for adults and 20p for children which can be paid for on the door or bought in advance from the school. On Friday 17th November the school hosts a Multicultural Evening with a talent competition, henna painting and lots of delicious food. The event starts at 4pm.
