At the end of this month New Deal funding will end for ten more projects. However, the Childcare Consortium received a reprieve at February’s Partnership Board meeting.

Forum House is to be bought by New Deal this month after they were approached by the Council with a plea to prevent it being sold on the open market for upwards of £750,000.

Burngreave residents will welcome the start of work on the Vestry Hall this month, as they see workers in hard hats scurrying around the site.

While plans for a skyscraper for Spital Hill are far from reality, other redevelopments are just around the corner.

In November 2OO5, First Mainline, put their bus fares up for the fourth time in a year. An adult single fare went up from £1.3O to £1.5O and South Yorkshire day tickets went up by 5Op to £3.5O. This represents a 36% price hike in 18 months.

Supporters of Burngreave Community Radio (BCR) are celebrating after a recent Ofcom decision to give the station a five-year licence to broadcast across this community and surrounding areas.

The popular multicultural Festival Music in the Sun, will be returning to Sheffield, presented by the Burngreave-based NonStop Foundation.

With the support of the Area Panel and New Deal, last year Green City Action (GCA) produced five major events in the community.

Claire Blencowe, who is a pupil at Fir Vale School, will be travelling to Melbourne, Australia in March to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

A new event for Burngreave’s gardeners is planned for this summer. Green City Action and the Messenger would like to invite local people who care for their gardens to open them for a day and show off their work and achievements.

Three of our local lollipop ladies were given awards by the Area Panel in January. Shirley Else who works at the crossings close to Pitsmoor Post Office and Susan Rogers stationed on Barnsley Road help children from St Catherine’s and Firs Hill Schools. While Valerie Hanson helps children from Fir Vale School cross Owler Lane and Rushby Street.

The Royal Oak is situated on the corner of Earsham Street and Kirk Street, just off Gower Street. There is a bus stop opposite which covers about eight services from the estates straight into town.

One thing almost all children love is being messy.

Over 15O Burngreave young people enjoyed activities and discussions at the Burngreave Study Support Consortium Evaluation Conference during half-term.

Myahla and Jalahn Palmer-Simmonds who live in the Burngreave area were asked to take part in an advertising campaign to raise £35O,OOO for the Children’s Hospital.

On Monday 16th January at the Pitsmoor Welcome Centre on Nottingham Street they all gathered again to celebrate Martin Luther King Day – recognising those great figures who have forced positive change for all mankind.

“In its entirety, Sheffield hasn’t changed a great deal,” said painter Joe Scarborough, who has lived and worked in this city most of his life. “It has always been very hilly and not the most fashionable city with its old-fashioned work ethic – if you’re not working on a Monday, it feels strange.”

A service at the heart of the community! ‘Mohammad’ has been recovering from cancer which has been especially difficult for him since all his family lives abroad, including his wife. He was separated from his wife just months after their wedding due to war in his home country and now hasn’t seen her for seven years. ‘Mohammed’ has been granted asylum in UK.

Long-serving and well-respected GP, Dr Mohammed Saleem is to retire on 31st March after serving the Burngreave and Fir Vale community for more than 32 years.

On the 26th March SADACCA celebrates its 20th anniversary. The starting point for the centre was in the 50s and 60s when the West Indian Community Association (WICA) was created.

The Children’s Information Service (CIS) is a citywide information organisation promoting children’s services for families and professionals in Sheffield, informing them about available daycare and other children’s services in and around the city.

Last autumn, the Messenger reported that a number of local groups were working together to encourage more pensioners in Burngreave to claim Pension Credit. So what impact did this make?
