Ellesmere Youth Project (EYP) has been keeping children safe and occupied in the Carwood and Ellesmere area for many years. Now some of their young people have brought together a dance group who have been entertaining Burngreave.
“I began coming here about a year ago,” explained Shaniece aged 14. “We then began singing and dancing mainly because we enjoyed it. We are now a group that started because more people were joining the club and we decided to form Militant as a performance group.”
“Dancing and singing takes place on Tuesdays at the Cornerstone Building,” explains Lorraine Blake, EYP’s Senior Youth Worker.
“Our aims it entertain everybody and the whole dancing and singing has given me confidence,” adds Shaniece.
“We think this youth club is fantastic for us to come and associate and spend time with our loved ones,” chuckled Ayesha and Francesca.
Seventeen-year-old Anton agreed that the scene for them was cool. “’Cos we can chill and express lyrics over our music and performance.”
Reuben, 12 said, “This is a good place, gets us off the streets and it’s a safe place to chill. Could do with it being open more time though.”
Fourteen-year-old Raymond explained: “This was a good place for us youngsters to chill out and learn to socialise. Seen…”
Sadie and Amina informed me how they’ve been able to get involved in many things including cooking and hairdressing. They have also been away on plenty of trips and outings.
“We also gained many certificates of merit which mark our achievements,” explains Sadie. “This year we have also worked as play assistants gaining experience with six- to twelve-year-olds,” adds Amina.
