In recognition of Adults Learners’ Week Burngreave Community Learning Campaign, in conjunction with other local organisations, launched the Burngreave Celebrates Learning Festival on Saturday 20th May 2006.
Learners Celebrate Success
Although rain threatened to ruin the event, it was well attended and most of the programme went ahead. The children enchanted on-lookers with their maypole dancing and the live bands were excellent. Food was provided by Crown Catering and other local caterers. Those businesses and organisations running stalls went in the Verdon Community Centre building.
Coral Jarrett from the Sheffield Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Foundation (SSCAT) and Karen from the Burngreave Drug Project were impressed with the turnout and interest by the community.
One local resident said: “It was an enjoyable day, but it was a pity that the attendance of the event was marred by the weather.”
Anne Grange, Burngreave Community Learning Campaign:
“Hundreds of people were there, and they really enjoyed it, even though the weather wasn’t brilliant – a big thank you to people for turning out.
“We gave out 40 certificates on the day to adult learners who had taken part in a wide range of courses including ESOL, cooking, IT, healthy living, first aid and food hygiene. Thanks to all the organisations who took part, and helped it run smoothly.”
