The proposals to make Hallcar Street one way off Spital Hill, instead of closing it entirely have been met with mixed feelings by local businesses.
Matthew Richardson, from the New Roots Café, said: “If it reduces traffic it would be good, but if lorries are going down the road it will be bad for our customers. If they were to close the road we could put tables outside.”
The one-way system may also cause problems for Designer Woodwork Services on Hallcar Street. Dan Stocks of DWS said: “Traffic mostly goes the other way so we may lose out.”
The plan to create formal parking on Spital Hill has been welcomed by local businesses, as currently customers find it difficult to park. Malcolm Seddon of Glenmill Carpets said:
“It will be an advantage for our customers, but not for us who park for nine hours a day. The meters will stop people parking here and going into town.”
Jodie Egan of Hobson’s Butchers agreed that customers will benefit from the plans. “It would make a lot of difference. People are parking their cars and coming in here, but at the moment they get tickets, so it puts them off coming here.”
