Editor/ Manager Job

Required for the New Burngreave Messenger Project

It’s the start of a new era for the Burngreave Messenger, for the next three years we have a new focus of supporting volunteers, developing our website and securing future funding.

The Burngreave Messenger is an established community newspaper, part funded by Burngreave New Deal for Communities. Over the next three years New Deal will contribute £135,000 to a project with a total budget of £270,000 to produce 6 issues per year. The project will build on the success of the last 7 years, developing and adapting existing systems and retaining some of the staff team from the project that ended in November 2006. A key part of the project will be to support and encourage more volunteer input, with the aim of also increasing the variety of work that they do.

The Editor will manage a staff team of five part-time workers. The staff team will consist of an Assistant Editor, Designer and Advertising Manager, Finance Manager, Office Manager and Website Developer. The Editor will need to manage the staff team through the transition to the new project, with new priorities.

The key responsibility of this job will be to secure funding to match the New Deal contribution and to develop funding and income that will sustain the newspaper beyond November 2009 when the New Deal Funding ends. Sources of funding will be researched in the first months of the project, but are expected to include a combination of appropriate grants, statutory and business sponsorship and advertising. The Editor will be expected to develop ongoing relationships with funders and sponsors.

The Editor will be expected to oversee the balance of the Newspaper, giving it direction and leadership; ensuring it is produced inline with internal policies and that the organisation is acting within the Law. While the Editor will have overall responsibility for the production of the Newspaper, the Assistant Editor will have the day to day responsibility of bringing the content together and supporting voluntary contributions.

The Editor will work closely with the voluntary management committee, providing support and enabling them to make informed decisions about policy and direction, and enabling them to fulfil their legal obligations as employers.
